A novel analytical model is provided to evaluate the perfor-mance of subcarrier modulated optical heterodyne frequency modulation(FM) using a distributed feedback (DFB) laser with nonuniform FM re-sponse taking into account the combined effect of laser phase noise andreceiver noise. Two different subcarrier signals, viz. minimum shift keying(MSK) and biphase, are used for direct frequency modulation of the DFBlaser diode. The modified Monte-Carlo simulation of the system usingthe ‘‘importance sampling’’ technique is also carried out. The MSK sub-carrier modulated optical FM is found to counteract effectively the de-grading effect of nonuniform FM response leaving only a small penalty of0.2 dB and provides better performance than biphase frequency shiftkeying. © 1996 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
