Image processing techniques applied to 3-D attribute volumes for lithology distribution

Image processing provides a comprehensive set of reference-standard algorithms and graphical tools for image processing, analysis, visualization, and algorithm development. For geophysical applications, it has been used for fault detection so far. So, taking advantages from these techniques, the design of special spatial filters has being done which help to map a possible sand/shale lithology distribution, reducing low amplitude attribute “artifacts” associated with shale-on-shale or other lithologies, allowing to the interpreter exploits the data richness available in 3-D seismic data, and corresponding 3-D seismic attribute volumes.
