Optical design and performance of wavelength-division-multiplexed optical repeater for fiber-optic passive star networks connection

New optical repeaters that use a wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technique to connect CSMA/CD-based fiber-optic passive star networks are discussed. Two types of optical filters that are essential for obviation of closed-loop formation in construction of such repeaters, have been designed and fabricated. Results of a field trial of the filters and optical modules using the filters show good agreement with design values. The repeaters were also found to operate reliably.
