Empirical study of remote respiration monitoring sensor using wideband system

Health-care support at home and care facilities is a very important issue in many developed countries because of the arrival of increasingly aging society. Respiration movement is one of very important vital signs which indicate daily health state of a person. This paper presents a signal strength based respiration sensor using wideband radio where a sample diversity scheme with a template correlation is suggested to continually detect the respiration rate for unconscious body movement while sleeping. In this paper, measurements were conducted for various bandwidths of 50 ∼ 500MHz and the feasibility is discussed for several scenarios.
