Response of Cooling Tower to Turbulent Wind

Existing knowledge on the behavior of cooling towers is summarized. The natural frequencies of a cooling tower are obtained from the equilibrium equations, in finite difference form, by assuming the vibration to be the sum of uncoupled circular modes. The numerical results are compared to published results for the natural frequencies of full-sized cooling towers. An experimental study of an aeroelastic model cooling tower in a turbulent boundary layer wind tunnel is reported. The experimental peak deflections were found to be about 2-1/2 times the generally accepted pseudo-static or mean deflections.
