Career strategies, job plateau, career plateau, and job satisfaction among information technology professionals

This research examines the conceptualization of career plateau and develops a related concept known as job plateau. Job plateau is defined as the point whereby the individual finds the work boring and that it provides no opportunities for learning new skills. Job plateau is particularly relevant to Information Technology (IT) professionals because IT professionals enjoy challenging jobs. IT professionals want to learn new skills to keep up with the fast evolving IT industry. While prior research has shown that career plateau has negative effects on career and job satisfaction, this research posits that job plateau too has negative effects on career and job satisfaction, and that the variance accounted for by job plateau is more than that by career plateau. Besides career and job plateaus, this research also explores their antecedents. Empirical data will be collected to test the relationships posited in this research.
