A new bandwidth allocation algorithm for ATM ring networks

This paper proposes an efficient and simple bandwidth allocation protocol for an ATM ring network to support the interconnection of LANs and MANs. This protocol is featured by the estimation of the traffic flowing into the ATM ring network, and the allocation of a required bandwidth dynamically, to make the required UPC function simple. The bandwidth estimation is carried out by the "network server" which is located on the ring network and observes the parameters which is related closely to the MAC LAN/MAN protocols. This paper shows that the "reset signal interval" of the ATMR, and the percentage of cells containing a request bit ("request rate") in the DQDB can be adopted as the parameters. For example, the short reset signal interval in the ATMR, and the small request rate in the DQDB, implies a low input load. The "network server" allocates the bandwidth based on the estimation result. This paper also shows the evaluation results of the proposed protocol in the application of the ATM ring network to inter-LAN communication and a connectionless service.
