The influence of satellite transponder broadcasting plan on video quality

This paper aims to determine, through experimental measurements performed on satellite television (TV) channels broadcasted in Europe, the influence of the satellite transponder broadcasting plan on the Perceptual Video Quality (PVQ) at the end user terminal. For the satellite television providers, there is always a tradeoff between the efficiency use of the transponder bandwidth, in terms of the number and type of the television channels on a transponder, and the image quality delivered on each channel. The author uses a previously developed specific application that can measure and monitor in real time and with real video content the viewer Quality of Experience (QoE), the viewer Perceptual Video Quality and the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. The experimental measurements where performed on various satellite transponders that use the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard DVB-S, with different broadcasting plans.
