Coupled-states analysis of the heavy-ion-induced L3-subshell alignment

The L3-subshell alignment parameter for nitrogen and neon impact ionisation of gold has been calculated in the energy range 0.17-1.5 MeV amu-1. The strong distortion of the L shell caused by the relatively slow heavy ions has been taken into account through a truncated set of coupled equations including couplings between the L substrates only. Considerable improvement has been obtained over first- and second-order Born theories in the description of the experimental data.
