Playing Videos for Infants on the Rear Seat: An Evaluation of Different Approaches

We present four different approaches that allow drivers to start a video on the rear seat of a car. Two systems use drag-and-drop gestures, and the other two use point-and-click gestures as input modality on a touch screen. For both interaction approaches, we used two kinds of visualizations. Two systems used an "active corners" approach (i.e., the bottom left and right corner of the touch screen represent the corresponding rear seats). The other two systems used a bird's eye view visualization of the car. The resulting four variations were systematically evaluated in a driving simulator study (N=12). Results indicate that drag-and-drop gestures were superior to point-and-click in terms of usability, task time and driver preference.
