Cadmium telluride detectors with thermoelectric cooling

Abstract The results of the development of detecting units for spectrometry for X- and γ-rays based on CdTe crystals cooled by Peltier elements are presented in the given report. Cooling of CdTe detecting units with M-S-M and p-i-n structures to temperatures ranging from −30 to −40°C allows a noticeable improvement in both the energy resolution and stability. Detectors of the p-i-n structure enable a resolution of 0.8 keV to be attained for an energy of 14.4 keV of 1.9 keV for an energy of 122 keV ( 57 Co isotone) and of 6.9 keV for an energy of 662 keV ( 137 Cs isotope) at high peak-to-valley values, respectively.
