All the situations discussed in this paragraph will be concerned with a prescribed basic linear space E≠ 0 over an arbitrary (within the limits of this section) field K (or simultaneously with several such spaces). The elements of the space E, i.e. vectors or points, will usually be denoted by lower case Roman letters, while lower case Greek letters will be used for scalars, i.e., elements of the ground field. The identity of the field will be denoted by the figure 1.
