Shared Representation in a VDS

Shared representation is a key component in the functioning of a virtual design studio. Design is highly information intensive, where the shared information includes passive documents such as information contained in handbooks, standards, and regulations; and dynamic documents such as information in the design requirements and brief, drawings, and subcontractor’s documents. Designers use a variety of information sources to augment their knowledge and creativity in order to comprehend, elaborate and evaluate the design alternatives that emerge during the design process. We view collaborative design development in a virtual design studio as a process of collaborative construction of individual and shared understanding and a mapping of this understanding onto a shared design representation.
