Energy Efficient Approaches in Wireless Networking

Wireless networking is one of the fastest growing segments of the computer industry, being the platform of many critical applications in the military or in disaster recovery situations, where deployment of traditional wired networks is infeasible. Wireless devices are battery powered and therefore have a limited operational time. Recently, the optimization of energy utilization of wireless terminals has received significant attention. Different techniques for power management have been proposed at all layers of the network protocol stack. In this paper we survey recent advances in energy efficiency for Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols, ad-hoc routing and topology control mechanisms.
