Research Pays Off: Warm-Mix Asphalt Heating Up in Virginia

Implementing the use of warm-mix asphalt (WMA) in Virginia raises the following challenges: (1) verifying that the pavement performance will match that of conventionally produced asphalt concrete; and (2) addressing the susceptibility to moisture. Research conducted by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research addressed these challenges. The results are discussed in this article along with the constructability and environmental benefits from the use of WMA.
