An approach based on fuzzy sets for manufacturing system design

Abstract In a total quality strategy, the design activity of manufacturing systems consists in searching for the means able to satisfy all users' needs from company customer to floor plant workers. Due to the variety of information sources and to the continuous changes of aimed goal, the data is inaccurate and vague. We propose to represent the needs using fuzzy sets to model wishes expressed in a linguistic way. Fuzzy logic is used to aggregate specifications and to deploy solutions. Possibility theory finally allows a graded evaluation of expected performances.
