Three-dimensional measurement of charge moting using doppler global velocimetry

When developing new combustion processes, a good knowledge of the type and intensity of charge motion is decisive. The correlation between global charge motion measured at the test bench for steady-state flows (swirl, tumble) and the combustion result is not always satisfactory. An important reason is the flow complexity, which can be measured only with spatially resolved measurement techniques such as Doppler Global Velocimetry. This technique was developed by the Institute for Propulsion Technology at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne, and it is used at IAV GmbH, in the scope of an exclusive co-operation agreement, for measurements on internal combustion engines.
