Original Article Effect of dilution on the motility parameters of Cyprinus carpio spermatozoa under short term preservation

Seasonal influence on the breeding and seed production greatly affects the aquaculture production. Asynchronous maturation among the male and female brooders necessitates the storage of gametes and development of protocol for artificial fertilization. Short-term storage at chilled temperatures of 2 to 4° C is practiced for the fish spermatozoa and results are encouraging. Dilution of milt is believed to be an essential step in the cryopreservation and therefore the effect of dilution on the spermatozoa of Cyprinus carpio during short-term preservation was studied for 96 hours diluted with 0.85% physiological saline solution. Motility duration was kept as a parameter for the evaluation of the effect and it was observed that the dilution has caused a reduction up to 60% in the motility duration from the initial value. The undiluted milt did not have more than 4% reduction in its motility duration during the above period of storage at 4° C. There was a reduction in the motility score also from 10 to 6 for the diluted milt while the undiluted milt did not suffer any big change in the motility score. The difference in the motility duration was also statistically significant at 95% significance level. © 2014 Universal Research Publications. All rights reserved
