Electroconvulsive therapy during pregnancy

“Şizofreni ile epilepsinin birlikte bulunmayacagi” dusuncesi, arastirmacilarin yapay konvulsiyon olusturma konusuna ilgi duymalarina yol acmistir. Fritsch ve Hitzig 1870’de beyinin elektrik akimiyla uyarilabilecegini dusunmuslerdir11-12. Şizofrenik ve katatonik hastalarin spontane konvulsiyon gecirdikten sonra, onceki durumlarina gore, duzeldiklerini gozlemleyen Von Meduna, sizofreni ve epilepsinin birbirini antagonize ettigini dusunerek ilk kez 1934’te “kafuru” kullanarak konvulsiyon olusturmus daha sonra, etkisi gec ortaya cikan kafuru yerine, damar ici pentilentetrazol (metrazol) kullanmaya baslamistir. Von Meduna’nin sizofreni ve epilepsi birlikteliginin beklenenden daha az goruldugu yonundeki gorusunun daha sonra gercegi yansitmadigi anlasilmistir.
