Propagation of yeast biomass from distillery wastes. Process and product evaluation

Distillery slops can be used for yeast propagation in mixtures with sugar cane molasses as source of carbon and energy. An ample range mixtures are possible to use, however, ratios slops:molasses (85:15 and 80:20) allow a more stable propagation stage able to ameliorate sharp changes in slops composition. Specific growth rates ranged from 0.19 to 0.284h -1 , significantly lower than that obtained for molasses medium in our labs. Biomass-substrate yields on carbon source basis turned out to be lower as well but no significant differences were found in product composition and quality respect to molasses based yeast. This fact makes such a technology not only effective as alternative to reduce pollution problems from distillery slops but at the same time an economic option for single cell protein production.
