A Disaggregate Analysis of Demand for Local Bus Service in Great Britain (excluding London) using the National Travel Survey

This paper analyses disaggregate travel demand in Great Britain (ex- cluding London) using the National Travel Survey (NTS) of 2008 and a nested logit model. We nd an aggregate national price elasticity of demand for local bus service of -0.36. This aggregate elasticity, being a weighted average of individual-level price elasticities, masks important variations at the individual level. For example, in many cases, up to 20% of individuals have price elasticities conditional on travel purpose that are larger than one in magnitude. We also nd that car ownership, bus frequency, and walk time to the bus stop, are important determinants of bus demand.
