Educational statistics as an indicator of technological activity

Abstract The aim of this paper is to introduce a new indicator of technological activity, educational statistics. A set of important phenomena can be described and analysed with the help of this indicator. These include the diffusion of a new generic technology through an economy and the evolution of the technology base of firms and industries. The usefulness of this indicator is illustrated with a few empirical examples drawing mainly from the electronics field.
