Exact inverse scattering solution of a non-linear evolution equation in a non-uniform medium

Abstract It is shown that the inverse scattering method can be used to obtain an exact solution of some standard non-linear evolution equations with certain types of inhomogeneities. An explicit two-soliton solution of a NLS in a non-uniform medium is given.
