A simple relationship between the gust response factor and fatigue damage

Abstract This paper introduces a new method to provide wind-induced fatigue estimates from gust factors used in quasi-static design. Fatigue susceptibility is quantified in terms of probability of failure, using safety factors consistent with those of second-moment reliability. The wind loading is evaluated statistically, and fatigue assessment uses Miner's law of cumulative damage. Probabilities of static and fatigue failure are related using a relationship between mean strength and fatigue endurance limit. The safety of structures against fatigue failure is then graduated in terms of gust factor, frequency, and other factors.
