Sub-meter accuracy localization system using self-localized portable UWB anchor nodes

To quickly deploy a location system at target sites, locator devices, so-called anchor nodes, are preferred to be portable and they are expected to self-localize their positions. Features of ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) technology are suitable to design a self-localizable positioning system while maintaining a sub-meter accuracy for target localization. This paper discusses the design of the UWB-IR localization system and evaluates an accuracy of a self-localization method of portable anchor nodes. Experimental results show that sub-meter accuracy is achieved for estimating anchor node coordinates and for locating a target surrounded by anchor nodes.
