Novel photonics sensing and systems for military metrology

Photonic systems are becoming more significant in military platforms, especially in aircraft, where the increase in data rate, improved EMI hardness, improved safety, and reduced weight, are together a significant advantage. The purpose of this paper will be to overview the current and future technological trends in photonic sensing and associated systems, specifically for military avionics. Selected case studies will include the application of optical fibre systems for the structural health monitoring of UAVs, and the revolutionary electro-optical Distributed Aperture System utilised on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. Future technological progressions will also be alluded to by examining the technology from other areas of physics and engineering. How the “all optical” (past all electric) future may revolutionise avionics will also be proposed.
