Multilingual Contrastive Analysis of Document Titles in UN Resolutions

By analyzing the document titles extracted from the multilingual parallel corpus of the UN (United Nations) resolutions, the structural rules of complex NPs (noun phrases) of Chinese, English, and Russian are summarized and compared in terms of orders of the modifiers of different semantic categories. Structural ambiguity prevails in the document titles, and multilingual parallel comparison can help structural disambiguation. The structural rules may also be applied in the machine translation of complex NPs.
