OSI Migration

Wallace, B., OSI migration, Computer Networks and ISDN Systems 25 (1992) 540-545. The objective of this paper is to make the assumption that we can ignore the "protocol wars" and assume that there are good reasons for wishing to migrate. In that context, the approach will be to investigate what we mean by migration, and is that the only approach, or is co-existence a viable option? Next, the intent is to discuss briefly the relative equivalence of the two main competing protocol applications and possibly protocol stacks. Further to this, it might be worthwhile investigating whether gatewaying is an option, and how such might be achieved. What are the driving forces behind such migration and which considerations need to be taken into account when putting together a migration strategy. Following on from this, there is an obvious need to discuss the possible strategies that might be employed, to produce a successful and relatively painless transition.
