PREDICTING CUTTING FORCES AT SUPER HIGH CUTTING SPEEDS FROM WORK MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND CUTTING CONDITIONS

Strain-rate dependent machinery theory is used to predict the cutting forces for a low carbon mild steel for cutting speeds in the range 100 to 10,000 ft/min. In agreement with experiment the force in the direction of cutting is shown to decrease with increase in cutting speed up to approximately 1000 ft/min. However, as the speed is increased further up to 10,000 ft/min it is predicted that this force will increase rapidly.
