Investigation on Operation Characteristics of Multi-Functional Flexible Power Conditioner

A new style FACTS device, the multi functional Flexible Power Conditioner (FPC), is introduced in the paper. The FPC incorporates the flywheel energy storage technology and synchronous condenser. By using AC excitation and vector control technologies the FPC can quickly and smoothly regulate the active and reactive power exchanging with the connected power system. As a result, it provides an effective measure to enhance power system stability. A simulation model for FPC is built up and the corresponding excitation control strategy is designed. The simulation results with MATLAB/ SIMULINK show very encouraging results of the proposed FPC. Satisfactory characteristics in power regulation and dynamic response are obtained.
