THE BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE REGULATORY CONTROL OF INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS IN FRANCE

Abstract In France, Water Boards are one of the main organizations involved in ensuring the respect of national and european legislation on surface, ground and coastal waters. Controls are carried out through analytical and biological tests. Apart from the two bioassays required by legislation - BOD 5 and the Daphnia acute toxicity test -, Microtox and algal assays are used in the screening for toxicity of wastewaters; genotoxicity and bioaccumulation, are now studied more and more.
