The mathematics teacher training is currently being restructured in many places in Germany. Our contribution will present an evaluation study that analyzes the effects of a stronger integration of visualization and elementary mathematics from an advanced standpoint in mathematical courses. The research design and initial results of this study will be part of our presentation. To follow up, another study will be presented, which is currently in preparation, but takes different types of knowledge in the eye which are mediated in the academic mathematical courses. The starting point of this study is the assumption that the mediation of mathematical content knowledge in the professional training of future teachers should lay more emphasis on the understanding of fundamental concepts of mathematics and their importance as well as their genesis and their application instead of a rather one-sided focus on algorithmic skills.
