Investigating Vehicular Energy Consumption and Emissions at Intersections with Micro-Simulation Models

To accurately model vehicular energy consumption and emissions at intersection, this paper develops a micro-simulation platform based on VISSIM and PERE models to investigate the relationship between vehicular speed and energy consumption; vehicular speed and emissions. Taking the intersection of Xizang North Road and Haining Road in Shanghai as an example, the paper conducts a quantitative analysis on the impacts of the priority stop line for bus at intersection and signal cycle length on vehicular energy consumption and emissions. The results show that the priority stop line for bus at intersection can reduce the total emissions of buses, but not the emissions of private cars. The signal cycle length between 80 and 120 seconds is most favorable for reducing vehicle average delay, stops, vehicular energy consumption, and emissions.
