Elasto-Plastic Response of Timoshenko Beams

A method for computing the elasto-plastic dynamic response of Timoshenko beams (i.e., effects of shear deformation and rotatory inertia included) is presented. The method uses a lumped parameter model. The effects of the interactions between bending moment and shear force on the yielding behavior are taken into account by a generalization of the plastic potential theory. Numerical remits obtained involved the following variables: the form of the interaction (yield) curve, support conditions, span length, and the web-thickness of the cross section. It is shown that the influence of shear deformation could be substantial even for beams of quite usual proportions.
