Providing Opportunities: A Sixth Column for the Techniques of Situational Crime Prevention

This paper adds to Situational Crime Prevention’s (SCP) techniques that are used to prevent or reduce criminal behavior. We create a sixth column of techniques to “provide opportunities” for offenders to do something else, i.e., to commit a less serious crime or a legal behavior. Our orientation is based upon a “hard” SCP approach. We respond to recent developments in SCP that have incorporated “soft” strategies and somewhat deemphasized the rational choice assumptions of SCP’s initial formulation.
