A vinaceous, keratinophilic fungus with smooth-walled macroconidia was isolated from soil in Argentina. This isolate was demonstrated by sexual crosses to be a mutant of N. gypsea. This study stresses the importance of inducing the perfect form before describing a new species Furthermore, this study demonstrated the need to use more than one tester strain of each mating type since not all A and a crosses within the same species are compatible.
