Upgrading and Ensuring a Fully-Automated Assembly Process Using Tolerance Management Methods

Abstract Deviations in assembly processes lead to rework or rejects and create a high risk to miss customer requirements. Therefore deviations must be monitored and planned. With increasing product complexity the sole reduction of deviations is not expedient. Process development must accompany product development. One approach for the systematic process development and technology management is the use of tolerance management methods. This paper presents a novel method for systematic analysis in combination with the Key Characteristics Flowdown and a technology radar to derive improvement concepts. The methodology is validated on an automated robotic cell in engine manufacturing.
