Integrated 1/spl times/2 loss-less Y-junction splitter on a passive active resonant coupler platform

Summary form only given. With the increasing complexity of optical modules, there is a need for integrating various active and passive devices on a single substrate to increase the functionality of optical chips. In our previous papers, we demonstrated a platform technology called passive active resonant coupler (PARC) for monolithically integrating active and passive devices. The PARC platform used resonant coupling over a taper to couple an optical mode from a highly confined quantum well region to a well confined passive waveguide. The mode transformation region was <100-/spl mu/m long with 0.1-dB coupling loss. PARC uses single epitaxial growth and conventional fabrication schemes. In the present work, we have fabricated a 1/spl times/2 Y-junction splitter integrated with semiconductor optical amplifiers to obtain loss-less characteristics demonstrating the utility of the PARC platform for monolithically integrating both active and passive devices.
