What is important for realizing an autonomous interactive robot

The requirements for developing an autonomous interactive robot for smooth man-machine interaction were determined by means of experiment: The game "Pong" was played by a pair of subjects (one is an operator and the other is a teacher) who did not share the same language. The results of the experiment revealed two phenomena. First, the process of understanding the instructions can be regarded as a reinforcement learning processes based on different rewards (i.e., one reward for successful game action or the other one from the teacher's high-pitched voice for the wrong action). The second was mutual adaptation in which subjects learned to respond appropriately to one another's behavior. It is expected that these two phenomena can be applied to an autonomous interactive robot that can establish intimate communication with humans.
