Non-linear propagation of signals in airs

Abstract The results of a theoretical and experimental investigation into the non-linear, planar propagation of sinusoidal and band-limited noise signals in air are presented. Signals with a fundamental frequency between 500 Hz and 3 kHz and with sound pressure levels up to 165 dB were used in the experimental investigation and were transmitted over a distance of 60 m in a tube. The extension to spherical waves and the possible role played by non-linearity in the propagation of aircraft noise are discussed.
