Child-rearing Practices and Psychiatric Disorder in Gujarati and British Children

The lower prevalence of psychiatric disturbance among the children of Asian immigrant communities in the UK was noted. In the light of this, child-rearing practices in the Manchester Gujarati community were compared with those in a sample of indigenous families by administering a structured interview to 100 parents of children aged four to seven years in each sample. Marked differences were found in the areas of discipline, feeding, sleeping arrangements and toilet training.
