Pervious Concrete Pavement Condition Rating Using Fuzzy Sets

Pervious Concrete Pavement (PCP) has numerous advantages over conventional concrete pavement such as its application in stormwater management. The PCP has been studied in a wide range of applications including buildings, walkways, and sewage plants, however it has not been comprehensively investigated in terms of its condition as pavement. Pavement condition rating by a panel of raters is an efficient approach to evaluate condition of a newly applied pavement such as PCP. However, it is not cost-effective and practical to conduct panel rating to evaluate condition of PCP regularly over its service life, while performing pavement distress monitoring is easier to implement and less costly. This research aims to develop relationships between pavement condition rating and pavement distress indices obtained through pavement distress monitoring. Fuzzy set approach is applied to deal with uncertainty which is inherent in distress monitoring. Two sets of relationships are developed based on fuzzy set and crisp or single point approach. The difference between the relationships is negligible but fuzzy set provides more detailed information.
