On-line monitoring of a wide range of biomass concentrations based on a new equation using a spectrophotometer: process control applications

On-line monitoring of important bioprocess variables: biomass, substrate, and product concentrations is considered a difficult task due to lack of reliable instrumentation. In a recent experimental study (Thatipamala et al., 1991) the authors have used a spectrophotometer for measurement of ‘high’ biomass concentrations and proposed a new equation: log(TT0) = K log(CC0), for absorption of light by yeast cells. The present work describes the application of this technique for on-line monitoring of biomass concentration in an ethanol process. This approach is shown to accurately track a wide range of biomass concentrations (3 to 25 g l−1 dw) in a continuous bioreactor (CSTBR) in a number of case studies and is also illustrated with a simple process control application.
