Garment-making and urbanization: an introductory study of four cases

This introductory study seeks to examine the factors at stake in the rapid growth of ready-made garments (RMG) exports and its impact on settlements in four centers. It explores the role of local and central government in managing this process of growth in the industry and its location, seeking to assess how far the export of RMG provides a more broadly applicable method to achieve economic development in low income countries. It highlights the fact that the bad social conditions sometimes seen as the necessary by-product of rapid industrialization have no economic justification and are by no means necessary.
