Lack of the space in many agricultural tractors make it difficult to design and install the catalytic muffler to reduce emissions. For this reason, inlet part of the catalytic muffler is made of L-type which has lower flow uniformity than I-type, and catalytic muffler has complex internal structure by various insertions. Flow uniformity and pressure drop are affected by insertions. Therefore, those should be considered when the catalytic muffler is designed. In this work, the flow uniformity and pressure drop to improve the performance of the catalytic converter and the engine have been numerically investigated by changing various geometries such as inlet shape, porosity, and outlet shape inside the muffler using the three-dimensional turbulent flow of the incompressible, non-reacting, and steady state inside the catalytic muffler. Finally, the results show that the shape, in which the muffler, respectively, has perforated pipe inside the inlet part and non-perforated pipe inside the outlet part, has higher uniformity index and lower pressure drop than others considered.
