Spatio-temporal evolution of faults: deterministic model

Abstract A theoretical model of fault zone dynamics, formulated in terms of dynamical systems, allows us to study both complex patterns of fracturing, as well as a repetitive seismic activity. In the latter case, the behavior of the system depends qualitatively on parameters: it may be periodic or chaotic. In this way, the cycle-to-cycle diversity known from observation is explained in terms of spatio-temporal chaos.
