This report describes the work performed during FY 1998 by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to identify organic components in Hanford waste tank samples to support resolution of the organic tank safety issue. The major focus during FY 1998 was the analysis of actual tank wastes under Hanford Analytical Services Quality Assurance (HASQARD) compliance. Samples from Tanks AX-102, C-104, BX-104, C-201, and C-202 were analyzed for organic constituents. Samples were analyzed using derivatization gas chromatography/flame ionization detection for chelators and chelator fragments, ion chromatography for low-molecular-weight organic acids, and ion-pair chromatography for chelators. The major components identified include low-molecular-weight acids (e.g., oxalic acid), chelators (e.g., EDTA) and chelator fragments.
