Power Loss and Efficiency Analysis of Clamp Double Sub Module using Analytical and Numerical Method

Modular Multilevel Converter in recent times has become a strong option as a converter in power transmission and drives for the challenging upcoming applications due to its characteristics of high efficiency, industrial scalability and under transient and fault conditions its fast dynamic controllability. It is a very important subject to calculate the losses and efficiency of a converter during the design and installation process. Keeping in view the importance of the subject, an analytical method for the calculation of losses and then efficiency is proposed in this paper. The method is applied on a clamp double submodule where the average and RMS values of the sub module's currents are used to compute the conversion losses. Then a MATLAB based code is programmed and the conversion losses and efficiency of the sub-module are calculated for various working conditions. The results show the variation of the conversion losses with the variation of switching frequency, power angle and modulation index.
