EUROPE ON THE MOVE: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPEAN COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT ACTIVITY RESEARCH. CHAPTER 1. CHALLENGES TO EUROPEAN TRANSPORT POLICY ANALYSIS

The author emphasises the importance of transport networks to the economies of Europe. He considers trends in passenger and freight transport, the changing political scene and the increased importance of information technology. A need is identified for a Europe-wide strategy for transport and communications. Four areas are identified where research should be aimed to assist in the formulation of such a policy. They include: a) integration and disintegration trends in Europe, b) the trend towards strong competition within Europe as a result of new network configurations, c) the strategic importance of new infrastructures and new technologies as competitive weapons and d) the conflict between economic progress and safeguarding the environment.
