Extremum Seeking Control Maximum Power Point Tracking Applied to Solar PV Water Pumping System Using BLDC Motor

This paper introduces an Extremum Seeking Control Maximum Power Point Tracking (ESC-MPPT) applied to solar photovoltaic (SPV) water pumping system with fast- tracking ability. This paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, comparison of ESC-MPPT with the traditional directly duty ratio driven fixed step size perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is carried out. The efficiency of both the MPPT is calculated to provide a base for ESC-MPPT. In the second part, the performance of the overall system applying ESC-MPPT is studied. In this article simplified ESC or scalar perturb-based, ESC alternatively called as ESC is used. Irrespective of ESC- MPPT and SPV array, this system employs a DC-DC Zeta converter, an Inverter, a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor with the electronic commutator. A Zeta converter is employed due to its relatively small output ripple then other DC-DC converters. MATLAB/Simulink based model is utilized for performance analysis of the overall system when subjected to a sudden change in irradiance when ESC-MPPT is implemented.
